Interpersonal Trauma
“Psychological trauma is the unique individual experience of an event, series of events, or a set of enduring conditions, in which:
-The individual’s ability to integrate their emotional experience is overwhelmed -The individual experiences (subjectively) a threat to life, body, integrity, or sanity. “
(Karen Saakvitne, 2000)
Interpersonal trauma is an umbrella term referring to trauma suffered within a relationship. It includes (but is definitely not limited to) abuse of any kind, sudden death, racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, illness, stalking, harassment, bullying, rape, violence, witnessing violence, intergenerational trauma, historical trauma, and humiliation.
Trauma is not defined by an event but by the impact an event has had on a person.
It includes anything from a single traumatic incident to prolonged or chronic trauma. The trauma’s effects depend on how the survivor perceives the event(s). Trauma can be experienced verbally, emotionally, financially, sexually, spiritually, and physically, through witnessing violence, and coercive control. The effects and symptoms of experiencing and living with the legacy of trauma are, in and of themselves, traumatizing.
The effects of interpersonal trauma can be lasting and impair a survivor’s self-concept and ability to form healthy relationships. Some (but definitely not all) people who live through trauma develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or other symptoms.
